The Odyssey 3
Sold
Wood engraved with extracts from the Odyssey by Homer,
between 1928 and 1930 for Ambroise Vollard, art editor in Paris.
25,5 x 16,7 cm – 10 x 6 5/8 in. on laid paper from Arches
by Émile Bernard
Presented as “a masterpiece of illustration and of edition” when it was published in 1930, the definitive work had 175 copies printed. It gathers 51 pieces of wood enhanced with sepia by the hand of the artist as Ambroise Vollard confirms in this dialog from his Souvenirs d’un marchand de tableaux: “Well, with the fifty or so pieces you began?… In short, I have hardly more than eight thousands proofs to start over. And he did as he said.”
