Éliane THIOLLIER

Painter Édouard Georges Mac-Avoy applauded Éliane Thiollier’s “vigorous and elaborate” landscapes. But others have first mentioned her palette, often generous in shades of ochre, grey, red and black. These colours came from her memories and her many journeys, to Kenya, Yucatán, Thailand and Camargue. And, to put it simply, Éliane Thiollier was skilled. She patiently mastered her skill with soft lead pencil, on stone, in lithography workshops. She mastered shading, white and transparency. From 1965, she made numerous prints for the Collector’s Guild of New York-proofs of an undeniable poetry. The critic Henri Héraut beautifully wrote: “by exhibiting Thiollier, silence is imposed as light is shown”.
